Today's Thursday installment of Whodunit has us combing through the Gatecrasher archives to figure out which celebrity duo started out as a three-way, presumably with one of the megawatt boldfacers making a cameo as the special guest star.
So which twosome was originally a threesome? Which Hollywooders would rather screen their partners through intensive orgies than deal with the meat-market of the online dating scene? Send in your best guesses, crackpot theories and most imaginative tips if you think you know Whodunit.
Which megastar couple, whose torrid fling was first flagged in this column, consummated their acquaintance with a ménage à trois?

• PRWeek is not a fan of the RTCA Dinner. Possibly because they failed to properly appreciate MC Rove. Probably because they think it's a conflict of interest for journalists and politicians sing, dance and jump in bed together.
• Is the Today show squandering its once massive lead over Good Morning America? 'Yes!" says Page Six. 'No!" says last week's ratings.
• CNN's American Morning will continue to be a "no glitz, no glamour" (and, presumably, "no viewer) operation.
• Meanwhile, Miles O'Brien looks forward to life outside "an air-conditioned studio" while his replacement, John Roberts insists, "I don't think [AM] has to be hard news like you're taking Robitussin."
• NBC renews 30 Rock for another season, gives Tracy Morgan something to do in between binge-drinking and hitting the strip joints.

Are you sorry about the media's temporary obsession with Anna Nicole Smith? Shocked, perhaps, by the unrelenting coverage of the death, custody battle and funeral, the damning evidence inside her refrigerator, or the ever-increasing numbers of potential baby daddies? Alarmed that an overzealous cable news media turned courtroom embarrassment Judge Larry Seidlin into a household name (and, in all likelihood, a television personality?)
Jack Shafer isn't
According to Shafer, there's nothing wrong with giving the people what they want. And in the hours, days and even weeks following Smith's death, the people wanted Anna.
More interesting, however, is Shafer's reasoning behind Anna's mass appeal. It's not, as most would (incorrectly!) assume, because Smith was "a bosomy, semifamous blonde who checked out at the age of 39."
In fact, up until around 1993, Smith was—in Shafer's estimation—"no more accomplished, newsworthy, or interesting than, say, Carmen Electra is today."
(Take that, Joan Jett!)
But, according to Shafer, the ANS phenomenon wasn't simply an example of lowbrow democracy in motion. The people didn't find Anna riveting because she was a "fat, no-talent, bleach blonde from Texas with breast implants." They found her fascinating because not even experts could ascertain what in the hell caused her death, explain what caused her son to overdose several months prior, determine who fathered baby Dannielynn and decide whether Howard K. Stern was a devoted lover or opportunistic enabler.
In other words, everyone loves a good mystery.
And there's nothing quite like curling up on your sofa in front of a blazing fireplace, soothing your nerves with a steaming cup of hot cocoa, bundling up under that chenille fleece you got (on sale!) from Bed, Bath & Beyond, and settling in for a quiet, relaxing night of "Anna Nicole Smith Funeral: The DVD."

In her final daily column at the Philadelphia Inquirer, veteran tv writer Gail Shister signs off in typical Shister fashion, promising that "[her] show isn't being cancelled. It's moving to a new timeslot."**
And in her last entry, Gail reminds us how different things were when she initially took the reins back in 1982. Back before Vanna White's first eyelift, when Tom Brokaw was just another backup anchor and "Bette Davis Eyes" (i.e. as opposed to "Bootylicious") was considered a chart-topper.
We'll miss Gail Shister's daily primetime musings, her plucky penchant for cable broadcasting programs, and her encyclopedic knowledge of shows like "Gunsmoke," that ran well before we were even born. Congratulations on a job well done, Gail. We'll definitely be tuning in for the sequel.
Which is clever, because it's about tv. Which just happens to be Gail's area of expertise!
